A Bygone Era

Shot long, long ago in 1999 at the house of my now-departed grandparents, in an era of life that will never come again, the print that the photo lab gave me was horrendous to the point that I thought I could never salvage an image of any value from it. Costco was as good of a film lab as anybody back in the day, but their printing was awful. Today they still print digital photos, and as far as I know, they still stink.

Fast forward a couple of decades when there are film scanners available to consumers that blur the line between analog and digital in a most extraordinary way, and I stumbled on the negative once again. Scanning it and wrestling with it in the GIMP for a little while, an interesting image came out. The irony is I have bird feeders that I am putting up in my own yard this spring to make for more photography opportunities like this one. Shoot photos, not each other. And for heaven’s sake, if you’re going to print them, don’t use Costco.
