Have a Drink

Given the news headlines of late, I think some explanation is necessary.

Firstly, Tito’s Vodka is made in Austin, Texas, USA. Secondly, the drink didn’t appear in Russian history until the 14th century CE, with some evidence to suggest it was actually invented as early as the 8th century in Poland. It’s for sure an Eastern European invention, but not necessarily a Russian one.

My point being that I am not voicing Russian support by showcasing what arguably is a very Russian product. On the contrary, I do not find Putin’s aggression acceptable in any way. I stand with Ukraine.

Rather, a big part of the joy of photography for me is randomness. The beauty in the mundane that might not be noticed at first glance. I couldn’t draw or paint to save my life. Artists have particular talents, and those simply aren’t mine. But when you’re taking pictures you realize that the work of drawing or painting is actually done for you. The only thing you have to do as photographer is capture it and work with it until you’re happy with it.

The first funny thought I had taking this picture at our local grocery store was the line from 1990s action film “Rush Hour.” Actor Chris Tucker looks at Jackie Chan and says “in this country I’m Michael Jackson and you’re Tito.” The symmetry of all those clear vodka bottles just looked interesting to me. Almost as if they were water bottles, though I’m sure their contents were anything but hydrating water. Shoot photos, not each other!
